Our Mission

In response to Aurora-Newmarket's growing population of newcomers, including the Chinese-Canadian community, now the second-largest ethnic minority residing in the region, COCOFA is dedicated to creating programs that foster cultural exchange and building bridges of communication and community-building between the Chinese community, pan-Asian communities present in Aurora-Newmarket, and other diverse populations present in Aurora-Newmarket and also in the broader York Region. We aim to celebrate various Chinese and Pan-Asian customs, cultures and practices while also helping newcomers seamlessly transition into Canadian society, building cross-cultural bridges and encouraging mutual understanding. COCOFA currently focuses on key activities that empower newcomers and the broader community, particularly youth and families with young and senior dependents. We prioritize creating opportunities for cross-cultural exchange between Aurora-Newmarket’s Chinese community and non Chinese members from diverse backgrounds, especially among youth. COCOFA's activities include a Pan-Asian community youth development initiative that focuses on mentorship, leadership, and cultural exchange amongst Aurora-Newmarket's 18 and under youth. We conduct a series of workshops that connect culturally diverse young individuals with experienced young adult mentors from various professional and cultural backgrounds. These workshops not only foster leadership skills and encourage personal growth but also provide hands-on learning experiences such as event management, public speaking, community organizing and the sharing of cultural experiences in various workplace, academic and social contexts between 19-25 mentors to 18 and under youth. Additionally, COCOFA runs language exchange programs, offering structured Mandarin and English classes along with interactive conversation sessions. These are complemented by Aurora-Newmarket area community-building social activities such as picnics and barbecues, which bring together participants of all ages and cultural & ethnic backgrounds. We also offer comprehensive newcomer family orientation and support through a series of in-depth seminars and information sessions, delivered in both English and Chinese, designed to assist immigrants in effectively navigating essential services such as healthcare, education, and employment.
